(Family Portraits in Albany, NY)
You’ve booked the session, wrangled everyone’s schedules, and promised bribes to at least one family member — now comes the hard part: what to wear.
It’s funny how the most important photos we’ll own can be derailed by one loud print or a neon hoodie that glows like a traffic cone.
As someone who’s photographed hundreds of families across Albany and the Capital Region, I can tell you — outfits matter a lot. But not in the way you might think. The goal isn’t “perfect.” The goal is cohesive, flattering, and timeless.
Let’s break it down.
Matching white shirts and jeans had their era but it’s over now. What looks modern yet still cohesive, is a color palette, not a uniform. Pick 2–3 tones that complement each other. Think neutrals + one accent (sage, navy, cream, dusty rose). If someone shows up in something loud, they’ll pull the eye from the faces — which is the opposite of what we want.
Plaid, sequins, logos, and seasonal themes like Christmas sweaters, might feel festive now but scream 2024 later. Stick with solid fabrics, soft patterns, overlays or subtle texture like knits, linen, and denim. You’ll love how that looks printed in 10 years and not dated.
If your session is outdoors in Upstate NY, the natural light will pick up earthy tones beautifully — olive, tan, rust, cream, and navy always photograph well. Avoid colors that make you camouflage with surroundings completely. If we’re shooting in-studio, lighter neutrals and soft contrast (white, beige, charcoal) create that magazine-polished feel.
Clothes should let you move, lift kids, or hug freely. Rigid, tight clothing makes you feel self-conscious and the camera picks that up instantly. At the same time avoid baggy, shapeless clothes. You want form fitting, where you don't have to suck anything in to remain in the outfit of your choice. You want to feel good. Comfortable people make the best photos, every single time.
You’d be surprised how many sessions are sabotaged by old sneakers or bright socks. One client showed up on old sneakers then while viewing his family session complained to me they didn't look right, and how he should've have worn dress shoes, and "can you photoshop them into dressy shoes?". Keep footwear neutral or barefoot for kids. Simple jewelry and clean nails complete the picture.
Choose one person’s outfit first (often mom’s) and build around that. It’s easier to coordinate than trying to make six people match by committee.
You don’t need to spend a fortune on this wardrobe you just need to look like you, but elevated. Remember, you are the main actor, and your wardrobe is a supporting cast. My job is to handle the light, posing, and flattering angles. Your job is to show up feeling confident and connected and the rest falls into place.
If you’re planning family portraits in or around Albany, NY, I’d love to help you create something that feels timeless and genuine to your family.
